Assimilation is a phonetic process in which two adjacent consonants within a word or at word boundaries influence each other so that the articulation of one sound becomes similar or identical to the articulation of the neighboring sound. The consonant whose articulation is modified is called the assimilated sound, while the consonant that influences the change is called the assimilating sound. Assimilation makes pronunciation easier and more natural in connected speech.
